July 30, 2018 HENNEPIN COUNTY — Today, Minneapolis Building and Construction Trades Council announced their endorsement of Irene Fernando for Hennepin County Commissioner in District 2.

For 60 years, Minnesota Building Trades has been advocating for the rights of workers and the development of construction trade unions while supporting those elected officials who help us in this effort. It is for this reason that we are proud to endorse Irene Fernando for Hennepin County Commissioner in District 2. Irene Fernando is an individual who prioritizes infrastructure growth and economic development without overlooking the importance of effective environmental policy and community engagement. She speaks for the everyday residents of Hennepin County and her voice will surely prove a positive addition to the Hennepin County Board.

Upon learning about the endorsement, Fernando commented, “receiving the support of Building Trades is an honor. This organization represents the voices of so many who deserve a seat at the decision-making table. I look forward to partnering with them to make sure they are represented in this layer of government."

Irene Fernando, a Harrison neighborhood resident and University of Minnesota graduate, is a candidate for Hennepin County Commissioner in District 2. The co-founder of a youth leadership non-profit headquartered in Minneapolis, Irene is also a Bush Foundation Fellow and has taught social entrepreneurship at St. Mary’s University. Currently, she works at Thrivent leading around organizational design, culture, and talent. Irene continues to contribute to the community through multiple board and volunteer roles as well.
